Lumix for Video Makers

The heart of Panasonic Lumix’s video-centric cameras are large sensors. Whether it’s a full frame (S1 range) or a micro four thirds sensor (GH range), they are both considerably larger than those found in professional video cameras.

Many of the advantages of these larger sensors are the same whether you’re a photographer or shooting video. In essence, as sensor sizes increase…

  • You can achieve shallower depth of field
  • Pixel size increases, improving low light performance
  • The size and weight of the camera increases
  • The ‘crop’ reduces (read more here!)
  • The larger the sensor the bigger and heavier the lenses as you simply need more glass to feed it light
  • The cost of the camera and lenses goes up with the sensor size

So there are technical benefits to larger sensors, but these have to be balanced against size, weight and cost.

For purists, however, there’s a large sensor ‘aesthetic’, an undefinable look in the S1 gives which cannot easily be replicated on an APS-C or micro four thirds camera. In our view, the S1, paired with the Lumix 50mm F1.4 S-X50 creates about as good a 4K image as you can get – at almost any price. That said, the GH5S with the SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 35mm T0.95 captures video that would please many a Netflix director…
