Like any encoding and decoding platform, Teradek Prism was originally designed for broadcasters and webcasters. Because the system is a 10-bit HDR video device, it is generating interest from post houses as a remote collaboration, and real-time monitoring platform.
With producers, directors, investors, editors and colourists working independently and remotely, Prism meets a very real need in the market by offering a solution developed with input from Technicolor and Netflix.
Currently, there are many ways to share, monitor and collaborate video from remote locations. These include the use of lower resolution proxies (unsuitable for judging colours and image nuance), video conferencing technology (often heavily compressed distorting the image) or dedicated fibre links (superb but expensive and limited to specific locations).
While streaming encoders have long been an option for remote post-production, the cost for high resolution, high quality encoders has been high. Teradek Prism breaks new ground as a 4:2:2 10-bit HEVC encoder which supports 4K video. In itself, this is a head turner for post-production teams, with its promise of low-latency streaming of DCI-4K or UltraHD HDR at manageable bitrates. With prices starting from under £1,675 + VAT*, it’s available for less than the cost of a modestly specified workstation.
Because Prism is part of the Teradek ecosystem, the advantages for editors goes further. Using the Core cloud platform and SRT encoding, post houses can securely stream over public networks to authorized remote workers via an App, using anything from an iPad to Apple TV. It’s very easy to use with virtually no technical input required customer-side.
What Teradek has done with Prism is clever: the colourist is grading in the suite, the director at home with a large format HDR display and DP on location with a professional monitor can now essentially share the same experience. The process is simple, but the results are stunning, and the benefits for collaboration, communication and creativity are huge.
